I’m going to share my top 5 tips for working from home and stay at home with your kids.
First of all: remember that everything takes twice as long!
So, don’t think it will only take you half the time to do things if you have a kid with you.
But, if you set up a schedule for yourself, make sure they are age-appropriate tasks because little ones are distracted by Mommy getting on their level to do something, so it’s easy for them to forget what they were doing or show interest in what YOU are doing instead.

Working From Home With Kids Tips #1 Determine how much YOU can realistically get done in a day.
For example, if you can only work one hour between naps for your baby, make sure all the tasks that take an hour or less are done during that time.
If you have a toddler who is not into crafts and coloring, then maybe you’ll need 2 hours to get everything done while they’re drawing and painting.
It’s essential to know how much YOU will realistically get done each day since it’s easier said than done when a little person is attached to your leg.
And, try sticking with your schedule as best as possible!
That way, you won’t psyche yourself out thinking, “Okay…this week I’m going to write on Mondays.”

Working From Home With Kids Tips #2: Remember why YOU are doing this in the first place.
Working from home is beneficial for parents, especially if you have a stay-at-home parent…
But, remember why YOU are working from home in the first place! If it’s to spend more time with your kids and save money, make sure you’re not always sitting right next to them when they are playing or coloring, or watching TV.
Work during nap time or when they are in school! And don’t forget to incorporate some adult time into your day to keep YOU sane.
Find ways to work around them while still being there for them because that’s what parenting is all about.

Working From Home With Kids Tip #3: Get out of the house once a day even if it’s just to the mailbox.
It’s so easy to stay home and work all day, but you should really try getting out of the house at least once a day…even if it’s just for 5 minutes to go get the mail or take out the recycling!
Not only does this help them burn off some energy (and hopefully wear them out enough that they’ll sleep well that night), but it gives YOU time away from your little ones.
And sometimes, I swear, we parents need that break more than our kids! It can be hard to remember what life was like before babies because we’re always with them but separating yourself even if it is just for an hour will make you (and consequently your kids) happy.

Working From Home With Kids Tip #4: Get stuff done when the kids are napping.
Naps are your friends!
And if you can get a lot of things done during nap time that benefits you, then do it! Of course, don’t abandon your child while they’re sleeping…but maybe clean out some closets or bathrooms or work on laundry during naptime.
If you have a big task to do for work and little ones who need attention from mommy 24/7, try setting the alarm for 20 minutes every hour so you can check your email or make a quick phone call without turning off what is giving them their needed attention at the moment.
Working From Home With Kids Tip #5: Take time for YOURSELF.
This is the most important thing to remember when working from home with kids because if you don’t take time out for yourself, your mental health and happiness will plummet.
It might be hard at first, but schedule some “ME” time for yourself so you can do stuff that makes YOU happy…whether it’s painting your nails while watching Netflix or going to a yoga class after the kiddos go to bed (or both!).
Whatever makes YOU happy helps everyone else in the family get through their day and enjoy themselves more too! And who knows?
Maybe it’ll even help you get more done during nap time because you’re smiling and refreshed instead of stressed and rundown!

6. Don’t take work home with you
It’s tempting but doesn’t forget that your kids are still at home and need your attention now more than ever!
You may feel like taking work home with you so that it doesn’t interfere with family life but this isn’t always the best decision because even though they have gone to bed, you won’t have seen them all day long so haven’t really interacted with them.
Even simple things such as watching TV together every night will help strengthen your bond.

6. Use a lock box
If you’re going to be using your computer for work, then you need to make sure that your kids won’t accidentally start playing games or visiting sites that aren’t appropriate when they get in front of it.
What’s even worse is if they delete important documents or unfinished work because when you hear the words ‘ Mommy is working, this will cause panic and discomfort, not least from yourself!
There are specially designed locks that can keep them out while still allowing you access when needed so try investing in one before the problems start.

7. Get creative!
Find new ways of keeping yourself on task without being too strict about it.
For example, some people work better when they take breaks every few hours while others are able to stay focused for an entire day without needing one break (and vice versa).
When I’m working on articles, I often play the radio in the background to help me stay focused on my writing.

8. Learn how to prioritize .
Sometimes doing laundry is more important than replying to emails;
Sometimes making dinner is more important than writing an article;
sometimes taking care of your family needs to come before all else!
Define which tasks need immediate attention and which ones can wait until tomorrow (hint: most can wait).
